You Learn Something New Every Day :)
This morning, a classmate (who will remain nameless) and I had a bit of a dispute over whether being an atheist and being agnostic are the same thing. He claimed that his "religion" was that he was agnostic, and then he explained to me that being agnostic means that you deny the existance of God. I told him that if he denied the existence of God, he would be atheist. And I wasn't sure if that was 100% right or not, because I have never heard of the word "agnostic" before and didn't entirely trust him, so I looked both words up in the dictionary. This is what I found :
ag/nos/tic - one who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
- An agnostic does not deny the existence of God and heaven but holds that one cannot know for certain whether or not they exist.
a/the/ist - One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
So, being an atheist and being agnostic are two different things, because atheists don't belive in God, and agnostics believe that there
could be a God but that there is no way to find out whether or not there acctually is. And that is my lesson for the day.
